Windmill
Bespoke solid oak windows, doors and frames created for the careful restoration of a remarkable 19th-century landmark.
The project
Crafting joinery for a Monmouthshire landmark
Set within the Monmouthshire countryside near Usk, Llancayo Windmill is a distinctive 19th-century building with an extraordinary history. Its restoration called for joinery that would respect the character of the original structure while meeting the practical demands of a beautifully renewed home.
LJH Carpentry & Joinery was commissioned during the 2007–2008 restoration to produce all of the external windows and doors in oak. Every element was made specifically for the building, allowing the proportions, detailing and finish to sit naturally within the windmill’s historic fabric.
Inside, the same considered approach continued with high-quality solid oak doors and frames. The warmth and natural grain of the timber bring continuity throughout the interior, while the robust construction gives each piece the substance expected in a project of this calibre.
The completed work demonstrates how traditional craftsmanship and careful material selection can help give an important building a new chapter. From the external openings to the internal joinery, each piece was made to complement the architecture rather than compete with it.
Made for the building
Oak joinery with a lasting sense of place
Historic buildings rarely offer standard dimensions or straightforward details. The external windows and doors for Llancayo Windmill were produced to suit its individual openings, with the strength and enduring character of solid oak making it an ideal choice for this exposed rural setting.
This tailored approach carries through to the internal doors and frames, creating a coherent palette of natural materials from outside to in.
